Trivia: Mary, Queen of Scots

Here's a piece of golf history trivia for you. Mary, Queen of Scots is regarded as the first known female golfer.She was apparently seen playing golf shortly after the death of her husband Lord Darnley!

First womens professional golf and amateur Lady Margaret Scott of Ireland

Although golf has often been considered a gentleman’s game or a businessman’s game, there have always been a few women who have taken it seriously, ladies from rich families with easy access to a course, athletes who have found the game irresistible. St Andrews of course led the way in 1867 founding  the first golf club for women, "The Ladies' Golf Club".The Irish Ladies' Golf Union was founded in 1893 and is the oldest Ladies' Golf Union in the world.

Later that year the Ladies’ Golf Union of Great Britain and Ireland was founded and Lady Margaret Scott won the Ladies' Amateur Golf Championship at Royal Lytham & St Annes Golf Club. She also who won the first three British Ladies Championships in 1893, 1894, and 1895.

In America, the LPGA has been around since 1950 and is one of the most established professional women’s golfing organizations. The founding members are in many halls of fame, as are some of the most respected and trail blazing women in professional womens golf.  Through the years this organization has grown and today, with the number of young professional women starting the tour and because of the talent in today’s women golf professionals, such as Karrie Webb and Annika Sörenstam, golf has finally become a recognisable sport for the women.

There was a time when womens golf competions were not given much attention, as in many other sports. Television coverage of womens golf has increased now there are more channels available to display to a more select group of people. Now more than ever ladies golf is coming into the mainstream, inviting high ticket endorsement deals and getting more coverage in sporting news.

Because of this young girls are taking up golf as a sport that they want to play and more women are choosing learn to golf vacations, taking time for learning the game and hitting the tees along with the men. Golf is a sport that mixes athleticism and skill and is not based solely on physical strength or endurance.This is appealing to many women as they feel they can compete on an equal basis with the men.

For women who are interested in learning the game, most golf courses have learn to golf vacations for women available that are only for women or groups of women  The lessons concentrate on tailoring the game specifically to a woman’s strengths. They can hone their skills and play a few rounds while vacationing in exotic places and enjoying themselves with their family.

For those who enjoy watching womens professional golf, the LPGA tour has stops at many of the major golf locations throughout the world.  Checking the LPGA tour schedule is sure to find a location that is close enough to observe some of the outstanding women golf stars on the circuit today.
 
Golf has been growing rapidly in popularity for all women. Like men, they’ve found out that you don’t have to be deadly serious about it. It can be just a great way for the ladies to have an afternoon out with the girls or for husbands and wives to enjoy the blue sky and the beautiful greens together.  Those who have not yet tried it might find its quiet pace and relaxing scenery just what the doctor ordered, a great sport and past time.
